Speaker 3:

In the midst of life's turmoil, we find comfort in the assurance that God is always with us. We find comfort in the assurance that God is always with us. This episode delves into three key passages that illustrate God's role as our refuge, deliverer and healer. These verses remind us that, no matter what we face, god's love and care are constant and unwavering. In this episode we look at Numbers 17, 18, and 19. On our list of the top 101 Bible verses. We look at Psalm 9, 9, psalm 34, 17, and Psalm 147, verse 3. Number 17 in our list of 101 favorite Bible verses is Psalm 9, 9. Reading from the New King James Version, we read the Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed a refuge in times of trouble. In the New American Standard Version we read the Lord also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And in the Message Version we read this verse is calling to those who are worn out, battered, beaten down, downtrodden, weary and just plain tuckered out. Can you relate? Does it sometimes feel the world is against you, murphy's Law, the devil and the enemy all ganging up on you at once? Ever feel so tired? You just want to push a pause button and catch your breath. Physically exhausted, emotionally worn out, jesus invites us to come to him, all of us who are weary and heavy laden, and he promises to give us rest. This verse is telling us that God understands our weariness and offers to be a shelter in the midst of the storm, a place to catch our breath and breathe and regain our strength, a pause from the crashing waves and their pounding against us.

Speaker 3:

In Psalm 99, the original Hebrew word used here for oppressed is dak, which comes from the root word meaning to crush or to oppress. This word carries the connotation of someone who has been beaten down, crushed or broken. It refers to those who are crushed or broken, both physically and emotionally dejected and afflicted, overwhelmed to the extreme, even to the point of being completely crushed. This word choice emphasizes the severity of the oppression faced by those whom God promises to protect. It's not just mild discomfort or inconvenience, but a state of being utterly beaten down and broken. By using this specific term, the psalmist is emphasizing God's role as a protector and a refuge for those who are in the direst of circumstances, crushed under the weight of oppression.

Speaker 3:

Sarah huddled in her apartment, her body shaking with each sob, as she endured the aftermath of another abusive episode. The bruises on her arms were a painful reminder of the life she desperately wanted to escape. In her darkest moments, she remembered a verse her grandmother used to recite the Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. With newfound hope, sarah called a domestic violence hotline and within hours she found herself in a safe house, surrounded by caring staff and other women who understood her pain. As she began to heal, sarah realized that the safe house was more than just a physical refuge. It was a tangible manifestation of God's promise to be a stronghold in times of trouble. Psalm 9-9 reminds us that God is a steadfast refuge for those oppressed and in trouble, offering protection and safety.

Speaker 3:

The next verse on our list is Psalm 34-17. Reading from the New King James Version the righteous cry out, and the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. In the New American Standard Version we read the righteous cry for help, and the Lord hears and rescues them from all their troubles. Being heard is important. It lets us know we are valued and we matter. You have a voice. You will be heard by the Lord. He will answer you. It is not a maybe he will answer you, but an absolutely he will answer you. I know faith can be hard at times and we may even be tempted to wonder if our prayers or calls for help matter. Do they go anywhere? This verse is a promise that your prayers ascend higher than the ceiling. They go directly to the throne of God. God cares. In fact, 1 Peter 5.7 reminds us to cast all our worry and care on Him because he cares for you. When we call to the Lord, this verse is a promise that he hears and will respond.

Speaker 3:

The Hebrew word used for deliver here in Psalm 34.17 comes from the root natsal, to snatch away, deliver, rescue, save. In the Bible it often refers to God's act of rescuing or delivering His people from various dangers, enemies or difficult situations. Deliver in this verse doesn't necessarily mean to exempt from or remove the problem entirely. Instead, it often means to bring through or rescue from within the situation. Deliverance is often a process. God didn't immediately transport the Israelites out of Egypt. He led them through a series of events that culminated in their freedom. The verse implies that the righteous may face troubles, but God is present and active in those troubles. While the troubles may persist for a time, the promise is that God will ultimately bring His people through them. Often the process of being delivered through a situation rather than from it serves to develop faith and perseverance and character. Sometimes God removes the problem, sometimes he gives us strength to endure the problem and sometimes he provides a way through the problem. The word natsal encompasses all these forms of deliverance.

Speaker 3:

A parent can understand better than anyone and recognize their own child's voice. A hundred kids could be calling for their daddy in Walmart, but if my kid is calling for me, I recognize them and hear them and respond. I know my children and I recognize their voice and their cry for help. This illustrates how the righteous cry out to God, trusting in his response. Just as the child expects the parent to answer, we can expect God to hear, recognize and respond to our cries. Number 19 from our list of 101 favorite Bible verses is Psalm 147, verse 3.

Speaker 3:

In the New King James Version we read he heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. In the Message Version we read he heals the heartbroken and bandages their wounds. When we are broken emotionally and physically and psychologically, we can get help from many places A self-help book, a good counselor, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a doctor, a therapeutic talking session or even the ear of a trusted friend or the hug of your mother. While all these can be helpful, this verse goes way beyond talking it out or seeking professional help or even medication. Way beyond talking it out or seeking professional help or even medication.

Speaker 3:

While all these can be useful and helpful and needed, this verse is about something more, much, much more, something supernatural, something that only the God who made you can do, he who created you can heal you inside and out, giving comfort and restoration to the broken parts of your soul and your heart. The God Almighty, the Creator, who can actually heal your wounded heart and soul and restore your well-being. It involves two parts, healing and bandaging, which denotes that God will restore you to being whole again, but also will be with you in the process, changing the bandages every day. God is like a caring parent or a care provider, being right beside our bed 24-7, nursing you back to health, never leaving you or abandoning you in the journey of healing and holding your hand every step along the way. In this verse, the Hebrew word for healing is rafa, which primarily means to heal, to cure or to restore to health. It can be applied in various contexts—physical healing, mending or curing bodily ailments. Emotional healing, restoring the brokenhearted. And spiritual healing curing spiritual distress or sin.

Speaker 3:

The use of Rapha in Psalm 147.3 emphasizes God's role as Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals. This title reveals God's character as a compassionate healer who mends the brokenhearted, binds up our wounds, both physically and emotionally, and restores His people holistically. Psalm 147.3 highlights God's role as a healer of the brokenhearted. This verse encourages us to seek God's healing touch, trusting in His ability to mend our deepest wounds. God's healing is comprehensive, addressing all aspects of our being.

Speaker 3:

In conclusion, this episode explored the profound comfort and assurance found in three Psalms. These verses converge on the theme of God as our refuge, deliverer and healer For those who are oppressed, troubled and brokenhearted. Psalm 9-9 establishes God as a steadfast refuge for the oppressed, troubled and brokenhearted. Psalm 9.9 establishes God as a steadfast refuge for the oppressed, emphasizing His protective nature in times of trouble. Psalm 34.17 assures us that the Lord hears the cries of the righteous and delivers them from their distress, highlighting His attentive and responsive care. And finally, psalm 147.3 reveals God's compassionate role as the healer of the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds and offering comprehensive restoration. Together, these psalms paint a portrait of a God who is deeply involved in the lives of His people, offering not just solace but tangible help and healing. They encourage us to seek Him in times of adversity, trusting in His promise to protect, deliver and restore us. The episode reminds us of God's comprehensive care, addressing not only physical needs but also emotional and spiritual wounds. By sharing our stories of God's intervention, we can inspire others to seek Him as their refuge, deliverer and healer, reinforcing the power of faith and prayer in overcoming life's challenges.

Speaker 3:
