TITLE: "BLESSING BLINDNESS" (1:07)

PURPLE BRILLIANCE (1:09)

Blessing Blindness. I used to live in the country, out in the middle of the woods. I remember one day in particular. I was rushing to work for a meeting for which I was running late. I glanced at my yard as I was jumping in my car and began lamenting my lack of time and how the grass was so tall and so badly needed to be mowed. I was beginning to be stressed about this problem when something caught my eye. I noticed in the middle of the grass a single, solitary flower. Even though I was running late, I could not take my eyes off this flower. I got out of my car and walked over to it, attracted to its isolated purple brilliance amidst the sea of weeds and belligerent grass. I stood over the flower and then bent down to observe its delicate glory. I realized that I was looking at a masterpiece, a work of art. I paused and had prayer right there and thanked God for his blessings. I decided to take a picture with my phone and then got back in my car, feeling like I had just been given a priceless gift and, I might add, feeling less hurried and less stressed. 

FLOWERS EVERYWHERE (2:16)

As I drove down our long drive and then the dirt road we lived on, I kept seeing flowers of all different colors and varieties all over the place. They're all along, but now visible. Because I was noticing them, I felt compelled to collect these blessings, so I would stop and get out of my car and take their picture. Each time I saw a new variety. Each time I stopped I felt more excited about my collection of gems, as if I'd found gold.

UNNOTICED BLESSINGS (2:49)

As I continued, my drive went on the main road to work, I continued noticing many wonderful flowers all around. I had not noticed them before, even though they had been there all along. I was not attuned to them, nor had I ever looked for them. Now, however, I was seeing them all over the place. I realized that I had had something I call blessing blindness. Sometimes we can be so hurried or so focused on what we consider problems, or just with the hectic pace of life, that we miss God's blessings which are right in front of us. In fact, many times the blessings are even hidden within the problems.

SURPRISE TREASURES (3:32)

Flowers are merely a reminder of the many, many, many blessings all around us. The purple flower I found in my yard that started my journey of discovery was a Zinnia. While not a wildflower, it certainly should not have been in my yard as I had not planted any flowers. While not planted by me or anyone else, somehow it got there, certainly planted by God as a gift. One of the other flowers I discovered in my route I was told it was actually a rare species of plant. Who knew a rare blessing that I had never received?

NATURE DECLARES GOD (4:09)

Of course, it is not just flowers that scream the glory of God, but all his creation that is all around us, little blessings, little reminders all around us to share a message that there is a creator, a designer. The same God that made those detailed works of art is the same God who made us and is the same God that loves us, the same God that protects us, the same God that has made a future for us. 

JOB 12:7-9 (4:39)

The Bible says, “but ask the animals and they will teach you. Or the birds in the sky and they will teach you. Or the birds in the sky and they will tell you. Or speak to the earth, and he will teach you, and let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?” (Job 12:7-9)

OPEN OUR EYES (4:59)

I pray that the Lord can open our eyes to see the blessings which he gives us each day and to not be so preoccupied with our worries that we do not see God's precious reminders that he is still God and he loves us and he will take care of us. Choose today to see the blessings all around you. Don't let the stress, the hustle, the worry and the busyness blind you to God's special gifts to you. 

CHOOSE TODAY (5:26)

Choose today to rejoice and be glad. (Psalm 118:24) “This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
