CONTINENTAL CONGRESS (1:07)

On the first day of July 1776, delegates representing the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the convening of the Second Continental Congress. On the agenda was to decide what to do about Britain and specifically their relationship with Britain.

JULY 4th vs. JULY 2nd (1:26)

On the very next day, July 2nd, the delegates voted to declare independence. On July 4th, the document to declare independence was adopted. Actually, it would take a month before the actual signing of the document would be complete. On an interesting side note, John Adams, one of our founding fathers and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, refused to celebrate July 4th as Independence Day, citing July 2nd as the actual day the declaration was made.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE (1:57)

The original Declaration of Independence can be seen in the National Archives in Washington DC. It's an impressive historical work which started the birth of a nation. This Declaration of Independence was a clear statement of decision that no longer would the 13 colonies live under the oppressing power of the enemy, the British. By declaring their loyalty and stating whose side they were on, they were, in essence, declaring war on Britain and claiming a new allegiance to a new nation. This choice was one motivated by deep conviction, a conviction they were willing to defend, fight for and even die for. Many would, in fact, die in the Revolutionary War for Independence, and we in the United States celebrate that freedom each 4th of July.

SPIRITUAL INDEPENDENCE (2:48)

In a spiritual sense, Jesus came to give us our independence from the enemy and free us from the effects and shackles of sin. He would not stand idly by and watch us be oppressed and burdened and controlled by sin. Instead, He became personally involved in our spiritual revolution. Jesus came so that we may have life, and life more abundantly. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

A CLEAR STATEMENT (3:24)

To make a declaration of spiritual independence is to make a clear statement of decision that no longer will we live under the oppressing power of the enemy, Satan. By pronouncing our loyalty and whose side we are on, we are in essence declaring war on Satan and claiming a new allegiance to the freedom of a new kingdom, that of Christ. We are claiming the victory that has already been won by Christ. This choice is one motivated with deep conviction, a conviction we are willing to defend, be witnesses to and fight for.

FREE INDEED (4:02)

One, Jesus, would die in this great war for our spiritual independence, and through Him we are set free and we are free indeed. (John 8:36) By making our spiritual declaration of independence, we are saying to Satan no longer will you control my moods and emotions and destiny. I am with a new kingdom now and I refuse to be oppressed and controlled and manipulated by you. I will stand fast, therefore, in the liberty by which Christ has made me free and I will not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1) We are stating, declaring, confessing that, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15)

CELEBRATE (4:55)

We should celebrate our spiritual freedom just as pronounced and excitedly as we celebrate our national independence. We need not wait for a specific day to do it. We can celebrate and be joyous in our spiritual independence every moment of every day. For I am glad to not be on the old path, with the old ways any longer. But God is doing a new thing in me and I am free.

HAVE YOU DECLARED INDEPENDENCE? (5:22)

Have you declared your spiritual independence? Have you notified the devil that he is no longer going to oppress you, mess with you, keep you down, control you? If you have not declared your spiritual independence, then I encourage you to take a stand today and change. Change your destiny.
