TITLE: "THE SPECIAL PLAY" (1:07)

OLIVET EAGLES (1:09)

The special play. The Olivet Middle School's football team, the Eagles in Olivet, Michigan, recently demonstrated what it truly means to look out for one another. After planning for weeks, the team conspired together, without even letting their coaches know, to develop a unique play to use during their next game to ensure that a special member of their team, Keith Orr, would score a touchdown. The scheme was in two parts. First part was to get as close to the goal line without scoring, and

KEITH (1:41)

the second part was to get Keith in the game, give him the ball and ensure he scored a touchdown. Who is Keith, you might ask? Keith is a special needs child who is learning disabled and is the friendliest kid you'll ever meet. Keith has no boundaries and sweetly hugs everyone when he sees them. Keith, while on the football team, hasn't ever actually played in any of the games.

KEITH’s TEAMMATES (2:08)

His team members love Keith, though, and wanted to demonstrate to him. He was one of them. They wanted to give him the opportunity to feel what it was like to score a touchdown. They wanted him to feel loved and special and important.

THE PLAN IN MOTION (2:24)

The plan went into motion. In their final game of the season, the Olivet Eagles were on a drive and the running back had the ball and was running for an easy touchdown, but then stopped suddenly and downed himself on the one-yard line instead of scoring. The crowd, not knowing the plan, was not happy with the team taking that dive, letting the coach in on the plan. Keith enters the game. All of the teammates are surrounding Keith to protect him as he's handed the ball and crosses the goal line for his first and only touchdown. His parents didn't even know it was going to happen and were obviously moved and ecstatic and exuberant. As the crowd realizes what has happened, they all cheer, incredibly, as Keith is carried off the field as a hero. I was especially moved by one of Keith's teammates, justice Miller. Incredibly, as Keith is carried off the field as a hero.

“NOBODY” BECAME “SOMEBODY” (3:19)

I was especially moved by one of Keith's teammates, Justice Miller. He confessed to not having ever thought about giving Keith any glory. However, after not only witnessing the touchdown but helping Keith score it and seeing how it changed Keith's life, Justice was changed. Afterward, he saw the nobody become somebody and he was moved. Justice said with tears in his eyes, “I went from somebody who mostly cared about myself and my friends to caring about everyone and trying to make everyone's day and everyone's life.”

IN HARMONY WITH CHRIST (4:00)

When we put others ahead of ourselves, it brings us into harmony with Christ's character of selfless love and changes us. The self is melted by service. God is love and we are made in the image of God. We feel most content, fulfilled and joyful when we are acting like our Father. Selfishness and sin separate us from God and our true purpose, but as we serve we are brought closer to the Lord who made us. Nothing feels better than finding our purpose. Truly, it is more blessed to give than receive.

JESUS SHOWED US (4:43)

Jesus showed us true humility as He demonstrated true service when He washed the disciples' feet. You can read about it in John 13. He, as the God of the universe, certainly had the right to lord over His disciples, be haughty or even be condescending. I mean, after all, He was God, the big guy. However, He never abused His power. He never used his position or power for self-adulation or selfish pleasure. Instead, he used it to uplift others. He served His disciples as a common servant, a slave.

PHILIPPIANS 2:3-11 (5:25)

The Bible says to not do anything out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility, count others more significant than ourselves. Let each of us not only look out to his own interests, but also to the interests of others (Philippians 2:3-11). May God grant us humble, simple spirits like these teenage football players. May we put others ahead of ourselves. May our joy be in service to others. May we find ways to honor the lowly, uplift the forgotten and love others to victory and let them know that they are winners. May we experience the true joy of unselfish acts.
