JASON (1:07)

Jason McElwain tried out for his school’s basketball team every year he was in high school.  However, at 5 foot six and with his skill set, he did not make the team as a player any of the 4 years he tried (varsity or junior varsity).  Instead, he would work behind the scenes becoming the team’s “team manager”.  He would support the team in other ways and help with equipment, water and any way he could.  He became their greatest cheerleader from their sideline in his white shirt and black tie.  He was the team's most faithful, on time, supportive and encouraging force.

A LITTLE BIT MORE (1:44)

To truly understand, however, the power of his story you will have to know just a little bit more.  You see Jason is autistic.   While he never “made the team” he never stopped being a part of it.  His persistent passion won the hearts of all his school friends even though he had never been in a game… at least until the final one.

THE FINAL GAME (2:09)

Heading into the final game of the season the coach pulled Jason aside and told him he would suite up and that he would "try" to put him in the game but he couldn’t promise anything.  It would was his last chance… the final game of his senior year.  With his team up big, the coach did indeed put Jason in the game for the final 4 minutes of the contest.  As Jason entered the game, his classmates went wild with excitement!  Many were wearing Jason masks they had made to show their love and support for him (having heard through the rumor mill that he “might" play). They were so happy he was “in the game”.

THE STUFF OF LEGEND (2:54)

What happened next is the stuff of legend.  After missing his first two shots, the crowd and coach wondered if he would be able to even make a basket.  Then Jason caught on fire sinking 7 consecutive shots (many of them 3 pointers) to finish the game as the team’s high scorer!  The crowd went crazier and crazier with each basket made and in the end his teammates carried him off the court on their shoulders victorious as the crowd emptied the stands onto the court in celebration.

MARGINALIZED (3:33)

I love this story.  Not just because it’s great to see an “underdog” be successful but also because it shows Jason’s hidden potential.  While his team and coach loved him, they all marginalized his involvement not understanding his true worth to the team.  No one knew that he could actually contribute.  Not just contribute but shine!   Have you ever been marginalized…picked last… had people “pigeonhole” you?  Have you ever been told you will never be something you knew you could be or told you would never accomplish something you knew you could accomplish? Satan wants to marginalize our potential.  He tells us we are worthless.  He tells us that we can’t make the team.  He wants us to be relegated to “warming the bench”.

GOD SEES OUR POTENTIAL (4:29)

In contrast, our Creator (our coach) comes to tell us He believes in us and wants us in the game.  He sees our potential.  While He knows our limitations He also knows what we can be with His help.  While we are “third string” players without Him, God gives us the opportunity to be “first string”, His children (John 1:12).  Instead of poor paupers… the Lord invites us to come to Him and He will make us princes and princesses!  While apart from God we can do nothing (John 15:5), with God we can do all things (Philippians 4:13)!

BEYOND EXPECTATIONS (5:11)

Beyond anyone’s expectations and certainly beyond Jason’s biggest dreams, Jason would go on to win an ESPY Award from ESPN for his performance and inspirational story.  As children of the King of the Universe, God promises us a golden crown and eternal life.  God wants to do incredible things through us and in us.  The Bible says, “Now unto Him who, by the power that is at work within us, is able to do far over and above all that we dare ask or think, infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes or dreams (Ephesians 3:20).”

REJECT STEROTYPES (5:11)

So reject the stereotype the Devil is trying to get you to buy and accept the awesome truth.  To the Lord you are something special.  Connect to His power and unlock your hidden potential with God.  We are more than conquerors in Christ (Rom 8:37).
