BEN UNDERWOOD (1:08)

Today's Mighty Moment. Seeing without eyes, Ben Underwood lost both eyes to cancer when he was young, but yet that did not slow this teenager down one bit. Instead of moping around, complaining or giving up on life, ben became engaged in his life and developed a unique way over the obstacle. Incredibly, he developed a form of echolocation, just like dolphins use, and, using clicking sounds he made with his mouth, he could see. He was able to walk without assistance and knew where all the objects were, using this special technique. Simply amazing. I was touched by his bright spirit and good attitude. He did not feel sorry for himself, nor did he demand to be treated as if he was disabled. He was a normal kid doing normal teenager things and he was not going to let his blindness slow him down or stop him from enjoying life. Sadly, ben would die from cancer a few days before his 17th birthday, on January 19, 2009. Even to the end, however, he had a bright smile and lived life. His inspirational story has moved millions who have heard it.

GOD’S ORGINAL WORLD (2:30)

This world is not how God intended. His world was a beautiful world. You can check it out in Genesis 1 and 2 with perfect beings and a perfect creation. However, when sin entered the world things got turned upside down because of evil and the effects of sin.

CROSS TO BEAR (2:49)

We each have a cross to bear. We each will have challenges and burdens because of sin and, in a real sense, we are all disabled. Some have physical disabilities, like Ben, being blind, but others deal with other debilitating effects of aging having diabetes, fighting against cancer, battling paralyzing depression. They're mute or deaf or crippled, struggling against obesity, fighting drug and alcohol addiction, fighting depression, repressing bitter rage, living in fear, consumed with worry, feeling unloved and alone, and the list goes on and on.

NO EXCLUSIONS (3:29)

Being a Christian does not exclude us from the effects of sin. Jesus' life was not easy. Paul the Apostle, had an affliction, a thorn in the flesh. The Bible says he had it his whole life and it was never removed. Certainly, being blind, like Ben, is a major challenge, but that's the point of this story. We all struggle against the physical, the mental, emotional scars of sin in our life, but Ben made a choice to not let that slow him down.

UNIQUE CROSSES (4:02)

We each have unique crosses that are huge to us individually. Yet here we have a young man like Ben who accepts his challenge and says Yep, this is the situation, let's move forward. Rest assured, God's plan is to restore all things. One day, at the last trump, He will come to receive us into His kingdom and in the twinkling of an eye, we will all be changed. At that moment He will restore our bodies into the perfect bodies that He intended us to have before sin marred us. I look forward to seeing Ben in heaven and having him see me.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE (4:45)

You are not alone in this world, regardless of the cross you bear. God is not merely waiting around until that day that he comes to get us. He offers us hope. Right now. God says I know life is tough and things are not easy. I know the crosses you bear. Then he extends an invitation to allow him to help. We have a friend who can walk with us in this journey, to ease the load. While the rain does not stop, the storms still come. He is there to strengthen us and empower us to overcome, to provide an umbrella of sorts in the reign of life. He promises that nothing, nothing will overwhelm us if we are with him. He will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear and he will provide a way out. 1 Corinthians 10:13. No matter what you face or what your cross understand, you are not alone and sin does not have to stop you. With God, all things are possible, even seeing when you don't have eyes.
