OFFICIAL PODCAST TRANSCRIPT

JOHNNY CASH (1:02)
Man in Black. I've always known that the late Johnny Cash was known as the man in Black and always wore black outfits. What I didn't know was why. I just assumed it was a stage name or a gimmick, or perhaps because he was known as a rebel. I recently stumbled upon this song that he wrote himself explaining just that, why he wore black.
MAKING A STATEMENT (1:32)
He said it was a statement to remind himself and those who watched him of the oppressed, the poor, the prisoners, the mourning, the sick, the lonely, the forgotten. The last part of the song goes like this You'll never see me wear a suit of white. Oh, I'd love to wear rainbow every day and tell the world that everything's okay, but I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back till things are brighter. I'm the man in black. Wow, I hear his authenticity.
Cash was a Christian man. He had a past and lifelong struggles, but he was never afraid of singing religious songs. He would often, in fact, include Christian songs in his concerts, even the famous ones, like the ones that he had given in prison. What a way to make a statement about injustice and the oppressed.
JESUS: FRIEND OF SINNERS (2:29)
I think of Jesus. Jesus was the friend of sinners. He was ridiculed for hanging out with prostitutes and tax collectors and the like. He hung out with the untouchables of His time. He stood up for those who had no one to stand up for themselves. He was the common man's savior because, as the book of Hebrews would remind us, he was touched with our infirmities. Jesus' command to us is for us to not forget the oppressed, to be His hands, His feet, His voice, to connect with those living in the darkness and to bring His light to them. We are to be salt to their bland world.
WHAT’S YOUR WAY TO REMEMBER? (3:10)
What is your way to help and remember the downtrodden? While we don't have to wear black all the time, perhaps we should do something. What could be your statement to remind yourself of how blessed you are and that there are those less fortunate. Never forget the forgotten. Be their champion, be their advocate, be their voice, be their Jesus.
