TITLE  (01:02 / 14:29)

“In Six Days”

RECAP OF PREVIOUS EPISODE: “ORDER OUT OF CHAOS”  (01:04 / 14:29)

In our last episode together, entitled “Order Out of Chaos”, we studied how God took a formless and void earth and transformed it into paradise. He made something out of nothing. God's creation was detailed, interconnected and in harmonious balance. We saw that it was utterly magnificent. We also looked at many insights and aspects of God's character that we learned and gleaned from the creation story. We saw how that both creation and evolution take faith to believe. But creation makes more sense.

INTRODUCTION (01:42 / 14:29)

Our passage today is found in the book of Genesis, chapter 1, verse 3, through chapter 2, verse 3. It provides a profound insight into God's creative power and His meticulous planning. This devotional will explore the six days of creation, the establishment of times and cycles, the literal nature of the creation of the week, God's purposeful approach and the significance of the seventh day. The lessons we can draw for our Christian walk are abundant. As we delve into this foundational passage of Scripture, we'll discover the intricate details of God's creative work and the implications for our understanding of the world and our place in it.

DAY ONE (LIGHT & DARKNESS) (02:29 / 14:29)

The first day of creation is found in Genesis 1, verses 3 to 5 (NKJV): “Then God said Let there be light. And there was light, and God saw the light that it was good, and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light day and the darkness He called night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”

On this first day of creation, God created light and He separated it from darkness, establishing the fundamental cycle of day and night. This act laid the foundation for all that was to follow. Light is necessary for life. It's noteworthy that light was created before the sun, moon and stars, demonstrating God's ability to create light independent of the celestial bodies we associate with it. This separation of light and darkness also symbolizes God's nature in bringing order out of chaos and His sovereignty over all creation.

DAY TWO (THE FIRMAMENT) (03:32 / 14:29)

On day two, God creates the firmament. Genesis 1:6-8 (NKJV): “Then God said Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters and let it divide the waters from the waters. Thus God made the firmament and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so, and God called the firmament heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.”

The word translated firmament here can be confusing to some, as they might consider it to be like a firm, hard dome, but that's not what it means. A look at the original language can help us here. The Hebrew word for firmament, רָקִ֫יעַ‎ (rāqīaʿ),

literally means expanse or spread out thinness. In fact, the verb for rāqīaʿ means to stretch out. This accurately describes the atmosphere, which is a thin layer of gases surrounding the earth. God created the atmosphere, separating the waters above from those below.

This crucial step prepared the earth for life. Air is necessary for life, oxygen for animals and carbon dioxide for plants. The firmament, or expanse, refers to the sky and atmosphere that surrounds the earth. This division was essential for the water cycle that sustains life on our planet. It's a testament to God's foresight and planning in creating an environment suitable for the creatures He would soon bring into being. Creating an environment suitable for the creatures He would soon bring into being.

Don't let the passage referring to the firmament as heaven confuse you. There are three uses of this word heaven in the Bible: The first heaven, the troposphere, which is the air we breathe in the space around the earth. That's what's being referred to here. The second heaven, the stellar heaven, which includes the sun, moon and stars... We'll address that on day four of creation. And the third heaven, the abode of God, which is the spiritual realm where angels and God reside.

DAY THREE (LAND AND VEGETATION) (05:35 / 14:29)

Day three of creation was land and vegetation, and we find this in Genesis 1:9-13 (NKJV): “Then God said Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place and let the dry land appear. And it was so, and God called the dry land earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed and the fruit trees that yield fruit. According to its kind.”

God formed dry land and seas, then filled the earth with vegetation. This prepared the environment for animal life. The creation of vegetation before animal life simply shows God's provision for the creatures He would soon create. The phrase “according to its kind” emphasizes the orderliness of God's creation and the genetic boundaries that He established for each species.

Here's an amazing statistic… scientists say there are close to 400,000 known species of plants on earth, with about 94% being flowering plants. Of course, this doesn't even include the plants that no longer exist and that are now extinct. This incredible diversity of plant life is even more astounding when you consider that they estimate around 2,000 new plant species are discovered or described every year. To put it in perspective, there are nearly 40 times more plant species than mammal species.

DAY FOUR (SUN, MOON & STARS) (07:09 / 14:29)

Day four of creation God made the sun, moon and stars. We find this in Genesis 1:14-19 (NKJV): “Then God said Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and seasons and for days and years, and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth. And it was so. Then God made two great lights the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.”

God created the celestial bodies establishing the means for measuring time and seasons. The sun, moon and stars serve multiple purposes: they provide light, mark the passage of time and serve as signs for navigation and agricultural cycles. This demonstrates God's wisdom in creating a universe that is both functional and beautiful.

Some theologians say that God made the stars previously and not day four, and this is just a reference to Him as their creator. I would disagree with this assertion. As the text would infer... yes, God in fact made the stars on day four. Four points of evidence: (1) The stars are mentioned in the same context and sentence as the creation of the sun and moon on day four (2) the verb made in Hebrew, עָשָׂה (asah), is used for all three sun, moon and stars, indicating they were all created at the same time. (3) There's no indication in the text that the stars were created separately or at a different time, and (4) the passage goes on to say God set them in the firmament of the heavens, referring to the sun, moon and stars collectively.

How many stars are there? Well, if you were to count each star at a rate of one per second, it would take you over three trillion years to count them all. This number of stars is more than all the grains of sand on all the beaches on earth. Each of these stars was individually created and placed by God, who knows them all by name, according to the Bible, Psalm 147:4.

DAY FIVE (SEA CREATURES & BIRDS) (09:20 / 14:29)

On day five, God created sea creatures and birds. This section is found in Genesis 1:20-23 (NKJV): “Then God said Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures and let birds fly over the earth, across the face of the firmament of the heavens...” God filled the seas and skies with living creatures, bringing vitality to these realms. The diversity of marine life and birds showcases God's creativity and His delight in variety. The blessing to be fruitful and multiply which He gave them reveals God's desire for His creation to thrive and to flourish.

Let's look at just one example of the sea creatures that God created on this day the blue whale. The blue whale is not only the largest animal alive today, but also the largest known animal to have ever existed. They can grow up to 100 feet long and weigh up to 200 tons. Their hearts alone can weigh as much as a car and their tongues can weigh as much as an elephant. A blue whale's blood vessels are so wide that a human could swim through them. Their low-frequency vocalizations are the loudest sounds made by any animal on earth and can be heard for over hundreds of miles underwater.

DAY SIX (ANIMALS & HUMANS) (10:41 / 14:29)

Day six of creation God made the animals and humans, a selection from Genesis 1:24-27 (NKJV): “Then God said let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind… So God created man in His own image; In the image of God, He created him Male and female. He created them.”

On the final day of creation, God made the incredible diversity of land animals and crowned His work with the creation of humans in His own image. Different than the rest of the animals, mankind was made in God's image, given the unique responsibility to have dominion over the earth, reflecting God's own rule and care for creation. An interesting fact about day six of creation is that it's the only day where God creates and then declares His work “very good” rather than just “good”. This emphasizes the special place of humans in creation... His crowning act. So important is the creation of Adam and Eve that we will dedicate an upcoming Mighty Moment episode just to this topic.

CONCLUSION (11:52 / 14:29)

In conclusion, the creation account in Genesis provides a powerful testament to God's creative power, His wisdom, His care and His planning. Over six literal days, God systematically brought our world into being, establishing the rhythm of nature and time. The six-day creation showcases God's deliberate approach. This passage challenges us to view our world with wonder and gratitude, recognizing the fingerprints of the Creator in all we see. It calls us to be good stewards of the creation entrusted to us, to take seriously His command to oversee His world and respect it and care for it. May we apply these truths in our daily lives, living as faithful stewards of His creation.

Let us approach each day with the awareness that we are part of God's grand design, created in His image to reflect His glory and to participate in His ongoing work in the world. The same God who methodically created the world in six days, not forgetting anything, is the same God that has you in the palm of His hand. He has a plan for your life as well.

PREVIEW OF NEXT EPISODE: “AN INCREDIBLE MASTERPIECE” (13:06 / 14:29)

In our next episode that is entitled “An Incredibly Huge Tiny Gift (Masterpiece)” we will continue our look at the creation story. As we explore the great diversity and complexity of God's creation, we will break down its incredible vastness and delve into its intricate smallness.

PARTING BLESSING (13:25 / 14:29)
