Mighty Moment is walking through the entire Bible story. Overall this episode is MM002 and is #2 of 51 in the series entitled "Genesis". This episode of Mighty Moment "Order Out of Chaos" is based on Genesis 1:2 and the topic is “A Creator God vs. Evolution”.

EPISODE SUMMARY
This episode focusses on how God took a formless and void earth and transformed it into Paradise. He created something out of nothing.   God’s creation was detailed, interconnected and in harmonious balance. It looks at the many insights and aspects of God’s character that we learn from the creation story. We will also see how that both creation and evolution take faith but creation makes sense.

“Order Out of Chaos”

 

RECAP OF PREVIOUS EPISODE “IN THE BEGINNING” (01:05 / 14:30)

We begin with a little review of our last episode together, entitled “In the Beginning”, where we focused on the beginning of all beginnings. We learned that God created the heavens and the earth and that God is the origin of everything that is, including you and me. We saw that God gave us His love letter, the inspired Word of God, the Bible, to reveal Himself to us and to answer our questions, and we learned that His Scriptures are a guide for our immediate decisions as well as a light to direct us in our long-range goals and plans.

 

GENESIS 1:2 (01:38 / 14:30)

Our scripture today is Genesis 1-2 (NKJV): “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

 

This verse provides a revealing glimpse into the state of the universe before God's creative work began, setting the stage for His magnificent act of bringing order out of chaos. The imagery of God's Spirit hovering over the waters evokes a sense of anticipation. Something big is about to happen. It suggests that even in the midst of chaos and darkness, God was present and preparing to act. This concept of divine presence amidst disorder can be deeply comforting when we face our own chaotic situations.

 

Now let's be clear… God is not finding or discovering the earth, but returning to it… as He was the one who created the earth, but now He's about to begin a new thing with it.

 

FORMLESS AND EMPTY (02:42 / 14:30)

Let's go to the original language that the Scripture was written in, Hebrew, to gain some insight into the condition of the earth before God does His creative thing. It “was without form and void.” The Hebrew language in Genesis 1:2 is (תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ)"tohu “Tohu wa-bohu". To break it down, the first part, “tohu” can be understood as wasteland or emptiness, while “bohu” implies “void” or “emptiness”. This expression conveys a nuance of emptiness, chaos and disorder. It represents a state of utter desolation, devoid of structure or purpose. This concept is crucial to understanding the transformative power of God's creative work. Together, they paint a picture of complete nothingness, a canvas awaiting the master's touch. “Tohu wa-bohu" conveys a state of formlessness, serving as a stark contrast to the ordered, vibrant world that emerges through God's creative acts.

 

The earth was, to use a Latin phrase, a “tabula rasa” or a “clean slate” waiting for the divine painter to begin painting, creating His masterpiece. I used to love to watch a TV show called the “Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross. There was something mesmerizing about watching him take a blank white canvas and create something spectacular. This is what God did, as He took the formless and void and gave it form, design and filled it with incredible, colorful, intriguing creation. Can you imagine what it must have been like seeing God speak things into existence? That would have been wonderful to witness.

 

“EX NIHILO” (04:30 / 14:30)

God's ability to create “ex nihilo” a Latin phrase that means out of nothing is incredible, amazing and unique. He is able to create something out of nothing. He has a unique independence. He does not need materials. Genesis 1:1 (NKJV) declares: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This verse implies that God brought everything into existence from nothing, demonstrating His supreme power and authority over all creation. Everything we know and have known had a beginning and came from something, was made from some material. God does not need anyone or anything to help Him create. God does not need materials or even matter to create. He simply speaks things into existence.

 

This concept of creation “ex nihilo” sets the Biblical account apart from many other ancient creation myths, which often depict God's shaping pre-existing matter. The idea that God can bring something into existence from absolute nothingness speaks to His unlimited power and sovereignty over all of reality. There is no one like God. 

 

The implications of creation “ex nihilo” are profound. It means that everything that exists owes its existence to God, as Paul writes in Romans 11:36 (NIV):, “for from Him and through Him and for Him are all things.” This truth should inspire both humility and wonder in us as we consider our place in God's creation. 

 

INSIGHTS INTO GOD (06:22 / 14:30)

We gain tremendous insights into God and who He is (His character and His abilities) from the creation account. Ponder these attributes of God and consider what they mean for your own relationship with Him.

 

Beside the aspects we've already looked at that God brings order from chaos and that God creates something out of nothing… we also learn that God's power is limitless, that God is a master designer and planner. That God's love is incredible for humanity, demonstrated by the gift of the earth and all that is in it. It's wonderful, diverse, fun and incredible that God is a creative God. This isn't a boring creation at all, but a spectacular one. God's attention to detail, from the immenseness of the cosmos to the intricacy of DNA or the microscopic atom building block. That God's a perfectionist. At the end of each day it says “it was good” and at the end of all the creation “it was very good” Genesis 1:31.

 

That God is a patient God. He was intentional and methodic. He did not rush with creation. God's incredible sustenance He creates but He also sustains. God is a generous God. He creates in abundance. God is a wise God. God knows what He's doing. He creates in the right order and makes sure that His creation is able to sustain itself. And God's desire for relationship He creates us to interact with Him in friendship and worship.

 

GOD PLANS AHEAD (08:15 / 14:30)

God's planning extends beyond the creation account. Throughout Scripture we see evidence of God's long-term planning. The promise of a Savior in Genesis 3:15, fulfilled thousands of years later in Christ, demonstrates God's ability to work across vast spans of time to accomplish His purposes. In our own lives we can take comfort in knowing that God is a master planner. The Bible assures us that God has plans for us, plans for good and not for harm. Even when we can't see how our current circumstances fit into God's plan, we can trust that He is working all things together for good (Romans 8:28).

 

CREATION VS. EVOLUTION (09:01 / 14:30)

The debate between creation and evolution is a long-standing one, with both perspectives requiring faith. While we don't have the time to do a deep exposition between the two now… I'd like to give a brief, common-sense argument for why creation makes more sense to me. 

 

INTERCONNECTED COMPLEX SYSTEMS (09:19 / 14:30)

The natural world is filled with complex interconnected systems that work in harmony. For example: the water cycle, the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle all interact to sustain life on Earth. Similarly, the human body is a marvel of engineering, with systems like the circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems working together seamlessly. These intricate systems and complex organisms appear to be purposefully designed. It's challenging to imagine these arose by chance. Just as a watch implies a watchmaker, the complexity of life suggests a creator.

 

THE HUMAN EYE (10:04 / 14:30)

Consider the human eye, the two eyes working in perfect harmony, the eye's ability to process millions of colors and adjust to varying light conditions, to see dimensionally, to focus, and even the ability to stay lubricated and to protect itself. The eye is just one example of many, many systems and parts within the human body that are just as incredible… not to mention how long it would take to discuss the amazing brain.

 

I can see now why David said in the Bible “I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works” Psalm 139:14 (NKJV). Charles Darwin, the author of the evolution theory, after considering the eye and all its incredible intricacies, is quoted as saying at the end of his life, “To suppose that the eye could have been formed by natural selection seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree.”

 

BOTH TAKE FAITH (11:07 / 14:30)

While evolution attempts to explain the development of life, it struggles to explain how life began in the first place. Even non-believers call life the miracle of birth. 

 

So, in my opinion, both evolution and creation take a degree of faith, but to me only one makes sense. After observing the world around me, I come to the conclusion that this was not chance, but that there was a master creator and designer. Seeing God as the Master Designer and Planner has an impact on my own life that God has specific plans for each of us.

 

In Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): God assures us “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” 


CONCLUSION (12:02 / 14:30)

In conclusion, God's creative handiwork is evident all around us. We can take comfort in knowing that this same powerful, designing, sustaining, planning, incredible God is intimately involved in our own lives… bringing order to our chaos, designing a purpose for our existence and loving us unconditionally… taking care of us. May we always remember that the God who spoke the universe into existence is the same God who knows us by name. He created us and knew us in our mother's womb. He invites us into a personal relationship with Him.

 

God has plans for us and wants to bring order and peace to our lives. So trust in His perfect timing and plan. Rest in the assurance of God's deep personal love for each one of us, a love that has been evident from the very beginning of creation.
