Announcer:Welcome to Mighty Moment, where it only takes a moment to have a mighty encounter with God. Our speaker, dr Bobby J Bowles, is guiding us on a transformative exploration of the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation as he brings to life the incredible and fascinating stories of the Bible. We pray that you are encouraged and spiritually strengthened, so let's turn our hearts and minds to the Word as we prepare for today's journey of discovery. Here's Dr Bobby with today's Mighty Moment.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:The Cosmic Matrix. In our last episode together, entitled the Blame Game, we looked at how Adam and Eve responded to God when he confronted them after their sin in the Garden of Eden. After they disobeyed, they quickly blamed others for their own actions. The episode also looked at taking personal responsibility for our bad choices, accountability before God ultimately in a day of judgment, and, finally, the hope we have in Christ as our advocate. In this episode, the Cosmic Matrix, we look at the origin of sin. As we've been studying the Adam and Eve story in our Genesis series, we now understand how sin entered the world through their fall in the Garden of Eden. Now we want to pause to understand how sin began in the first place. We want to go even further back in history to the actual origin of sin. Where did it come from? Why was it allowed? Origin of sin when did it come from? Why was it allowed? Who is Satan and who are the players in this cosmic battle between good and evil? The key Bible passage for this episode is from the New Testament, in the book of Revelation, chapter 12, verses 7 to 9. I'm reading from the New King James Version. All other scriptures will be from the New International Version and war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail. Nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of of old called the devil and satan, who deceived the whole world, and he was cast to the earth and his angels were cast out with him as humans. It does not take long living in this world before we begin to ask questions, deep, probing, serious questions. If is so good, why is the world so bad? Why is there so much suffering? Why do bad things happen to good people? Does God care about me? These questions strike at the core of our understanding of God, morality and the nature of existence itself. To find answers we must journey back to the very beginning, not just of Earth's history, but of the cosmic conflict that set the stage for our world's struggles.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Our story begins in heaven, long before Earth was created, and the key player in the saga is an angel named Lucifer. The name Lucifer comes from the Latin words lux, meaning light, and fere. To bear or carry. It literally means light-bearer or morning star. This name reflects the being's original status and purpose. Lucifer held a position of great honor and responsibility in heaven. He was created as the pinnacle of angelic beings, endowed with beauty, wisdom and power. He had a very important job. He was perfectly created, living in an incredible, awesome, joyful, peaceful and spectacular place heaven.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Ezekiel 28, 12-14 says of Lucifer you were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, but sadly, trouble was brewing in paradise. Our story today is ultimately a tragedy of a fallen angel. Ezekiel 28, 15 and 17 gives further insight into what happened to change everything. It says you were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. Your heart became proud on account of your beauty and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. These verses reveal the tragic turn in lucifer's story from perfection to corruption. Isaiah fourteen, thirteen to fourteen, reveals what changed in lucifer's heart. It says you said in your heart I will ascend to the heavens, I will raise my throne above the stars of God, I will make myself like the Most High.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Lucifer's demise began with an inordinate focus on himself. He had an I problem, a me problem, his self-centeredness and desire for self-exaltation and his fixation on his own beauty, wisdom and position would lead to his downfall. Lucifer's fall from grace is a cautionary tale about the dangers of pride and the corruption of power. Lucifer wanted to elevate himself to God's level, even the most exalted being God himself. When consumed by self-importance, you can fall from the heights of glory to the depths of disgrace. So why did God allow this to happen?
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:The question of why God allowed sin to enter both the heavenly and earthly realms is complex and multifaceted. The quick answer is that God created us as free beings. God did not create automatons or pre-programmed robots to blindly obey. Instead, he created beings with the capacity for genuine relationship and love and choice. God created us with the ability of free will the ability of choice. If you take away the ability of choice, you take away the ability to love. Love by its very nature requires the freedom to choose. Without the ability to reject God, the choice to love him would be meaningless. God gave His angels and humanity the ability to choose. This gift of free will is what allows for authentic love, worship and makes us unique, autonomous beings. The ability to choose was a great risk, for sure, but with it also created the possibility for genuine love and a relationship with God himself. Our Creator deemed the risk of rebellion worth the risk in order to have truly free, loving beings.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Back to our story in heaven, lucifer and his angels rebelled and openly were against Jesus, and the loyal angels rebelled and openly were against Jesus and the loyal angels. The cosmic conflict escalated from Lucifer's internal pride to open revolt against God's authority. Unbelievably, there was an insurrection in paradise. The created were defying their creator, as we've already read in our key verse found in Revelation 12.7,. Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. Many theologians believe this reference to Michael here is actually a reference to Jesus himself. This great controversy is in fact between Satan and Jesus. This verse describes the climax of the heavenly conflict, with Michael leading the loyal angels against Lucifer now referred to as the dragon and his followers.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Ultimately, god had to act. God's perfect justice and holiness could not allow open rebellion to continue unchecked in His presence. Sin, upheaval, sedition could not remain in heaven. The very nature of heaven as a place of perfect harmony with God's will meant that those who chose upheaval and chaos over God's principles and law could no longer remain. Their choice led to separation. Sin always leads to separation from our Maker, as it is contradictory to His character.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Revelation 12.9 says the great dragon was hurled down, that ancient serpent called the devil or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth and his angels with him. The outcome of the heavenly war is clear Lucifer and his rebellious angels are cast out of heaven. It set the stage for the ongoing spiritual battle that would play out on earth. Revelation 12.4 suggests that a third of the angels joined Lucifer in his rebellion and were cast out with him. With Satan and his angels cast to earth, our world became a battleground in the cosmic conflict. This expulsion set the stage for the temptation in Eden and the subsequent fall of humanity.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Satan challenged God's order. Satan accused God of being unfair, claiming his law was impossible to keep and that he was a vengeful deity. He argued that God's creation was insulated and lacked true free will. The tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden served as a test, allowing Adam and Eve the choice to obey God or, through disobedience, align themselves with Satan's rebellion. Earth became a stage where the character of God and the validity of his government would be demonstrated before the watching universe. The choices of humanity would play a crucial role in this cosmic drama.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Sin entered the world after the fall. Despite God's clear instructions and warnings, adam and Eve chose to disobey, eating the forbidden fruit. They failed the test With their act of rebellion. Sin and its consequences entered the human experience. Evil and corruption entered and marred God's perfect creation, entered and marred God's perfect creation. The effects of sin extended beyond humanity, impacting the entire created order. The fall of Adam and Eve transformed earth from a paradise in harmony with God's will to a realm where sin, suffering and death became realities. This event aligned humanity with Satan's rebellion, necessitating a divine plan for redemption.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:In conclusion, the origin of sin and suffering stems from a rebellion that began in heaven, with Lucifer's pride, leading to a war and his and his angels' expulsion to earth. This set the stage for humanity's fall in the Garden of Eden, introducing sin and death into God's perfect creation. God's granting of free will to angels and humans was crucial for genuine love to occur, but unfortunately, his creation used that privilege to rebel. The tree of knowledge of good and evil in Eden served as a test, and Adam and Eve's disobedience brought sin into the human experience, corrupting creation and making earth a spiritual battlefield. So now we have context to help explain the existence of suffering, pain and evil in our world, now revealing them as consequences of rebellion rather than God's intent.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Despite this fallen state, god has not abandoned His creation. His plan of salvation demonstrates His love and commitment to restoring the harmony of His original design. His plan would eradicate sin, redeem his creation and restore all things. Friends, in our next episode entitled Missing the Mark, we will look at what sin actually is. We will seek to define it and understand it. What is the nature of sin? What is the power of sin? What are the results of sin, who is affected by sin and, finally, what breaks the powerful hold of sin and its penalty of death? I hope you've enjoyed our time together and I pray you have a mighty moment with God today. Be blessed.
