Anouncer:Welcome to Mighty Moment, where it only takes a moment to have a mighty encounter with God. Our speaker, dr Bobby J Bowles, is guiding us on a transformative exploration of the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation as he brings to life the incredible and fascinating stories of the Bible. We pray that you are encouraged and spiritually strengthened, so let's turn our hearts and minds to the Word as we prepare for today's journey of discovery. Here's Dr Bobby with today's Mighty Moment.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Unintended Consequences.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:In our last episode, together, a Loving God Responds, we explored God's loving response to Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden, in the aftermath of humanity's first sin, we witnessed a God who didn't ignore sin, but he also didn't abandon His creation. He instead responded with justice, yes, but also with care and mercy. We saw how God's reaction demonstrated his deep love and commitment to his children, even in the midst of their darkest moments. In today's episode, unintended Consequences, we examine the natural result of Adam and Eve's disobedience. We witness the immediate consequences of sin. We explore the profound impact of their choice, from the shame of self-awareness to separation from God, to the fear that came upon humanity, to the division that came into their own human relationship. Ultimately, we look at God's response to these consequences. Yet even in this serious, critical moment, with these terrible effects of sin, we see glimpses of God's grace and his ultimate plan for redemption. The key passage for this episode is Genesis, chapter 3, verses 7 to 13 and verse 22. We're reading from the New International Version. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man when are you? He answered I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked. So I hid and he said who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? The man, said the woman you put here with me. She gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate it. Then the Lord God said to the woman what is this you have done? And the Lord God said the man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:To set the stage for our study, let's consider the consequences of sin, and that they are severe and far-reaching. God's warning to Adam and Eve was clear Disobedience would result in death. The new created beings were now under a terrible penalty. Romans 6.23 makes that clear, for the wages of sin is death. But there was more cost than just the penalty Beyond death. The perfect world would now change. It was now corrupted. Humanity began to experience new dreadful emotions, feelings and mindsets. These consequences and fallout were now being manifest in what was once a harmonious, peaceful existence. Despite the lie of the snake, you shall not surely die, god's word proved true.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:The moment Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, death began its work in creation. This death was multifaceted. There were immediate natural consequences. The harmony of creation was disrupted, relationships were strained and the physical world began to decay. There were also eternal consequences. Humanity fell under the judgment of eternal separation from God. God would address this consequence in his plan of redemption.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:We will examine this in a future episode. In this episode we want to examine the immediate unintended results of sin and how it affected the man and woman After Adam and Eve's disobedience. An unexpected consequence was that they experienced an immediate and profound shift in self-perception. They felt naked and ashamed. Genesis 3.7 states. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:The Hebrew word used here implies more than mere physical nakedness. It suggests a state of vulnerability and exposure. This newfound awareness of nakedness represents a fundamental change in how Adam and Eve perceived themselves and each other. Before sin, their nakedness was a natural state, free from shame or self-consciousness. After sin it became a source of embarrassment and vulnerability. The attempt to cover themselves with fig leaves symbolizes humanity's futile efforts to hide their imperfections and shame from God and each other. It's the first instance of human-made religion an attempt to make oneself presentable to God through one's own efforts. The shame that Adam and Eve experienced was multifaceted. There was psychological shame they felt exposed, vulnerable and unworthy was multifaceted. There was psychological shame they felt exposed, vulnerable and unworthy in their natural state. There was a relational shame their perfect relationship with each other was tainted by self-consciousness and blame. And there was a spiritual shame they felt unworthy to stand before God in their sinful state. This shame was so profound that it drove them to hide from God, the very source of their being. It represented the internal turmoil and self-condemnation that sin brings into the human experience.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Another unintended consequence of sin it created a chasm between humanity and their Creator. Genesis 3.8 paints a poignant picture. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. This hiding represents a break in communion. The intimate fellowship they once enjoyed with God was now disrupted. There was a fear of judgment. Their guilt made them afraid to face God. There was a spiritual alienation. Their sin created a barrier between God and humanity. The separation culminated in their expulsion from Eden, god's special gift to them at creation. This banishment symbolizes the loss of intimate presence. They no longer had direct access to god's manifest presence. Mourning of you will certainly die was fulfilled in their spiritual separation from God and it represented a broken relationship. The perfect harmony between God and humanity was shattered. Jesus would ultimately be the bridge to span this great divide in the relationship, and we will discuss this more later when we discuss the plan of salvation.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Another unexpected consequence of sin it brought with it a new emotion fear. Sin brings fear. Adam's response to God in Genesis 3.10 is telling I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid. Instead of being excited to see God now, they were afraid to see him. This fear manifested itself in various ways Fear of God's judgment, fear of death, fear of the unknown, fear of vulnerability, a fear of what's coming next. Fear became a pervasive, dominant emotion in human experience after the fall, it affects relationships, decision-making and overall quality of life. One of my favorite verses in the whole Bible gives the answer to fear and who is behind it. 2 Timothy 1.7 reminds us, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:The entry of sin brings another unexpected consequence, and that was division in the human relationship. Adam goes from calling Eve bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh and thinking that she is awesome, to throwing his new bride under the bus. Sin caused them to turn on one another. The fall of Adam and Eve had an immediate and profound negative impact on their relationship, introducing division and discord where there was once harmony. After eating the forbidden fruit, shame and guilt entered their consciousness, causing them to hide from each other and to blame one another.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:Adam naming his wife Eve after the fall demonstrates several important aspects about their relationship and how sin affected it. There's a shift in dynamics. Before the fall, adam referred to Eve simply as Woman Genesis 2.23. But after the fall, in Genesis 3.20, he names her Eve, indicating a change in their relationship, with Adam taking on a more authoritative role. It also demonstrated an increased separation the act of naming creates a distinction between namer and named. The act of naming creates a distinction between namer and named. This reflects the increased separation between man and woman that resulted from sin, as opposed to their previous unity. Lastly, adam naming Eve demonstrates an exercise of authority. In biblical context, naming often signifies authority or dominion. Adam naming Eve could be seen as him exercising the authority mentioned in God's judgment your desire will be for your husband and he will rule over you. Genesis 3.16.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:In conclusion, the story of Adam and Eve's fall reveals the unintended consequences and the devastating ripple effects that sin creates in human existence. Their single act of disobedience transformed not only their relationship with God, but fundamentally altered the human experience, introducing shame, fear and division where there was once only peace and harmony. The consequences were immediate and far-reaching, affecting not just their generation but all of humanity that would follow. Yet even in this darkest moment of human history, we see glimpses of God's grace. Though Adam and Eve hid in shame, god sought them out, calling when are you? This question wasn't asked because God didn't know their location, but rather to open a dialogue with his fallen creation. Even as he pronounced judgment, he was already setting in motion his plan for redemption, showing that his love transcends human failure.
Dr. Bobby J. Boles:While the fall brought devastating consequences like shame, fear. While the fall brought devastating consequences like shame, fear, broken relationships and separation from God, it wasn't the end of the story. The same God who walked in the garden seeking His hidden children would ultimately send His Son to bridge the chasm that sin created. Through Christ, we find the answer to every consequence of the fall Acceptance for our shame, perfect love that casts out fear. And he offers reconciliation for our broken relationships and restored communion with our Creator. Adam and Eve could never have imagined the damage that sin would bring into the world, but our loving God was not content to let sin win and had already set in motion the ultimate solution. Friends, in our next episode, entitled Specific Judgments, beyond the fact that creation was now contaminated with sin and there was an eternal consequence of death weighing on humanity, god issued specific punishments against the snake, satan, eve and Adam. These curses are still in place today. I hope you've enjoyed our time together and I pray you have a mighty moment with God today. Be blessed.
